Project Evaluation and Outreach – Re:Match Publications

With Re:Match, the relocation of asylum seekers within the EU was successfully implemented for the first time using an algorithm-based matching process.

The project is being evaluated in detail and closely monitored through advocacy work on the local, national and European level.

The initial evaluation results as well as findings and recommendations for decision-makers are presented in two reports published in January 2024 and available for download here.

For a progressive and effective migration and asylum policy, we need more solidarity in the European Union– with the people seeking protection as well as with the Member States where they first arrive. To make this solidarity work in practice, the Berlin Governance Platform has piloted the “Re:Match – Relocation via Matching” project.

Through an innovative, algorithm-based process, protection seekers in EU external border states are matched with welcoming European cities on a needs-oriented and individualized basis. With this unique municipal and participatory approach, Re:Match contributes to strengthening relocations through tailor-made solutions with better integration results. Re:Match demonstrates how, in close cooperation with cities, sustainable paths of solidarity can be created.

Re:Match holds considerable potential for a more equitable and effective migration policy. Relocation via Matching is the tool with which political commitments and obligations of international treaties can be realized in an innovative way. Additionally, the participatory nature of matching procedures grants cities more agency in the admission of protection seekers, potentially fostering municipal support for relocation schemes decided by EU member states.
